David A. Waldman

As CTO and Executive Vice President of Media Engineering of STX Aprilis, David is responsible for providing leadership to create, defend and extend STX Aprilis’ intellectual property portfolio and to steer the overall technical direction of the company’s holographic technology.

Before STX Aprilis, David was Chief Scientist of DCE Aprilis, a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow Corning Enterprises. David co-founded Aprilis in 1999 where he held positions of VP of Research and Development and Chief Technical Officer. In October 2007 David received the IWHM Award in recognition of his work on development of CROP photopolymer materials “now widely accepted as one of the world’s best materials for hologram recording”. At Aprilis, David directed the media development, was responsible for identification and demonstration of critical technologies on the technology and product roadmap of the company, and directed development and expansion of the intellectual property portfolio of the company.

Prior to Aprilis, David spent eight years at Polaroid Corporation's Research and Development Division as a group leader in Holographic Materials Research. David is co-inventor of the CROP chemistry method for photopolymerizable holographic recording materials, and of advantageous implementations of the method as well as compositions of matter. In the early 90s, David developed an advanced version of Polaroid's basic holography technology that directly resulted in a multimillion-dollar Holographic Optical Elements business for Polaroid and enabled high-security holograms found in drivers' licenses and other identification cards and in holographic diffusers used as back plane reflectors in mobile phones, pagers and PDAs. David also spearheaded a team that significantly improved the hologram manufacturing process resulting in a 200% production capacity increase. David has served as a co-investigator of federal government programs to develop switchable liquid crystal-holographic composite materials. Prior to Polaroid, David worked in the Polymer Structure Group at Dow Chemical U.S.A., developing liquid crystal epoxy polymers.

A Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, David is a co-inventor of 22 patents, co-author of more than 25 published papers, 2 book chapters and over 30 technical presentations at topical meetings.
